Paysages composant le Jura (Landscapes making up the Jura), 2024
Collage of black and white postcards, 62 cm x 77 cm
Nobody knows the exact location of the painting ‘Paysage du Jura’ by the famous painter Gustave Courbet, who was born in Ornans in 1819. The painting was bequeathed to the Republic and Canton of Jura by Hugo Berthold, a native of Delémont who died in Zurich in 2015, and now hangs in the Musée jurassien d’art et d’histoire in Delémont.
Based on Niklaus Güdel’s description of a possible location in his book ‘Gustave Courbet – Une enquete sur le paysage’, page 276/9, we visited this spot on the banks of the Desoubre.
The collage work Paysages composant le Jura reproduces an imaginary landscape made up of various pieces of photographic postcards of existing landscapes. The collage technique refers to possible assemblages of different landscape elements, as practised by Gustave Courbet in some of his works.
